  • ANY ADVANCE ON ANDREW?
On Tuesday 20th September The Rotary Club of Tarporley inducted Andrew Wallace as a new member. Andrew was previously in Round Table for many years holding a wide range of positions and rising through the ranks! He was sponsored by The Rotary Club to visit Japan several years ago on the Group Study Exchange programme. Luckily he came back, and now being of suitable maturity has been welcomed into Rotary. The photo shows President Stuart pinning the Rotary badge on Andrew, whilst District Governor Geoff Shelmerdine and other club members & visitors look on.
On the same evening two Rotarians owned up to having reached the ages of 60 (PP Tony) & 64 (Alan Robinson) so it was drinks all round!

  • Sept 12th - HORSE RIDE 2005.
We moved venue to Organsdale farm this year and incorporated Robin Latham's ride into our own course, giving riders a bumper 10 mile course . About 150 riders joined us for a super day, and again we managed to raise important cash for local charirtes.
The weather was fabulous, and nearly everyone (bar two runaways!) had a super time, AND yet again it didn't rain. Click HERE for a page of more pictures from an earlier year. (Takes a couple of minutes to download if your still living without BroadBand!)

  • BLUES BROTHER and SISTERS
On Tuesday 20th April we were visited by the visiting GSE team from Chicago. Despite their complaints about the cold, and members plumbing, it was the hottest night of the year so far! After a Blues Brothers musical intro, we were treated to a show on the ladies' laptop showing the homes, work and families of the team members seen here.
President Tony & Group Leader John exchanged bannerettes, and we presented the team with copies of our Tarporley Then and Now book, to show just how up to date Tarporley really is!
Even our most sexist members seemed to joy the mixed company. Well done sisters! The cause has moved foward.

  • PRESIDENT'S NIGHT
FEBRUARY 11th 2005 saw the 22nd annual President's Night in honour of Tony Yeates.

  • LADIES OUT OF UNIFORM, AN OFFICER & A GENTLEMAN
Also in January we also entertained the local team of district nurses who had helped to make last year's Stroke awareness day such a success. On the same night we were entertained by a speaker telling us all about the history of The Cheshire Regiment.

  • INTERVIEW PRACTICE
In JANUARY, we helped students at Tarporley Community High School prepare for job and College interviews by giving them a 30 minute practice run, with constructive feedback to follow. The photo shows two students, each being interviewed by members of the club in the High School Drama centre. Afterwards winners were chosen, and prizes will be given

  • TSUNAMI DISASTER
In JANUARY, we worked with pupils, parents & teachers at Tarporley Primary School to provide some practical help for the victims of the tsunami disaster. Club Memebrs Roy Hitchen & Martyn Abram showed a video and gave a talk to the school. We then provided them with two empty AQUABOXES, which the school filled in a few days. The boxes comprise a rigid plastic container for purified water, obtained with the use of a filter and purification sets also supplied, together with other survival items. Head Teacher Ian Devereux-Robers commented that it was a very useful educational exercise as well as an opportunity to provide practical help.

The club also organised High Street collections which raised a further £2,000, nd filled a number of 'Emergency Boxes'. These contain essentials such as towels, sheets, shoes & clothes to provide short term comfort to families who have lost everything.

  • HORSE RIDE 2004.
Again, over 280 riders and horses took part in our Charity Donation Horse Ride in September.

Click HERE for a page of more pictures. (Takes a couple of minutes to download if your still living without BroadBand!)

The weather was fabulous, and nearly everyone had a super time, AND yet again it didn't rain.

We raised nearly £3000 for charity!!!
Thank you to everyone who came; everyone who helped us out by letting us use their land, barns etc; all the walkers and motorists who were inconvenienced by us; and all the Rotarians & non-Rotarians who helped.
See you all next year! Tell your friends how good it was!

  • CARNIVAL TIME
AS ever we worked through the year with Round Table to organise another successful carnival in July. We've produced a DVD of the event which you can buy on the High Street in Blaggs Radio & TV shop. All proceeds go to charity.

  • What a Stroke of LUCK!
On Saturday 3rd April 2004, members of the club, spent the day in a caravan with 6 district nurses, led by Sister Jane Caine. Enough to raise anyone's blood pressure!!!
It was National Stroke awareness day and they were on Tarporley High Street, providing FREE blood pressure tests to passers by.
High blood pressure is a major contributory factor leading to strokes, and so the tests were to help people become aware of their pressure so they could take preventive action if necessary.
One hundred and twenty people were tested, and of those over FIFTY PERCENT were high. We must live too well, work too hard and worry too much in Tarporley!. Click HERE for pictures.
  • PRESIDENT'S NIGHT
FEBRUARY sees the annual President's Night. It appears that Roy had a good time in 2003!!!
    Handy

The event was in honour of our President Mike "Just like this" Metcalfe.

During the evening Mike asked a lady guest what she'd like to drink. She said "I'll have a double entendre please", so he gave her one.

  • CHRISTMAS CHESTNUTS 2003
Well - Christmas once again saw our brave members out on the streets offering their nuts to passers by. We continued our tradition started a few years ago of giving them away, and again managed to raise over £270 for charity, the same amount as in the previous 2 years despite the horrible weather! The weater may have been disappointing, but takings certainly weren't. THANK YOU Tarporley for your generosity. Nutty picture.
  • 2002
  • WINE TASTING. Members of the Club, together with wives, partners, friends and members of Inner Wheel enjoyed a wine tasting evening at Tarporley's Done Room at the end of July.
A very informative talk about Chilean wine was presented by The Wine Rack, together with hints on how to appreciate wine's colour and taste.

  • CARNIVAL 2002. What a SUPER (and HOT) day!!!! Kerpowee* ZAP. Batman opened a superb event, with the usual brilliant selection of entertainments & fun. 10 shops entered the widow dressing competition which helped brighten things up a bit. (Come on! How about MORE next year?) MORE on this story soon.
  • RACE NIGHT. Rotary joined with Round Table for a night at the races. Over 80 people attended a race night featuring FERRETS, staged by the International Ferret Rescue & Welfare Centre from Walsall. A superb evening was had by all, enjoying the thrill of 7 races, a Hot-Pot supper, a bar and raffle. Just to add to the evening we had a raid by the police who were checking licenses in all premises in the town. Both clubs raised money for club funds.

  • WE'VE MADE A NEW BED AT OATHILLS LEA. Our first activity of 2002 was to build a raised flower bed at Oathills Lea. This replaced the unsightly old clothes lines and makes a more pleasnat outlook for the residents. Also being raised, it means that they will be able to get the pleasure of doing some of their own gardening without bending. Can I have one too?

  • ROTARY CLUB members provided interview experience to nearly 90 pupils at Tarporley Community High School in January 2002. Each year we provide our services free of charge to run 'mock interviews' giving every year 11 pupil the opportunity to submit an application letter and CV, and then be interviewed for a job. We are always impressed by the many pupils that take advantage of this support that would not otherwise be available. We again hope in future to provide guidance in application letter and CV writing which the school has been unable to give to date. Later in the year we will present prizes to the top scorers.

  • CHRISTMAS CHESTNUTS 2001
Once again we maintained our tradition of giving away roast chestnuts on the High Street on the Saturday before Christmas raising over £270 for charity. We couldn't have done it without the kind donations from the generous shoppers in Tarporley.
  • AUSTRALIANS VISIT TO TARPORLEY. At the end of September, The Rotary Club of Tarporley played host to a party of 5 Australians, who were visiting England within the Rotary International Group Study Exchange Scheme. The visit started in time honoured way with a meal in a pub.
During their time with us they saw aspects of Cheshire life, visiting a local cheese factory, a dairy farm, Chester and Tarporley libraries, hospitals and Chester College. They also gave an excellent presentation, giving us an insight into their way of life, and how to cope with a warm climate!

  • September 26th saw yet another successful sponsored Golf Competition at Portal Premier Course.
Once again, members Alan Robinson & Robin Paterson organised a superb event, attended by about 30 teams, and which raised £2,000 for charity. Thanks to Alan and Robin and everyone who attended!

  • CARNIVAL 2001.An even bigger success than last year even though instead of BIG STAR Matthew Kelly we had the very distinguished Rotary District Governor Bob Sutch to open the event. About 3000 people turned out, and we nearly sold out of programmes. We had the biggest procession ever, AND the highest stalls take-up for a long time.We also re-introduced the shop window dressing competition which helped brighten up the High Street.
Lots of different charities and organisations attended having a good time whilst each reporting excellent takings on their stalls.

Over 100 people came in 'Mediterranean' dress, ate ada Spaghetti, drankada vino and hadda good time. Over £1000 (and everyone's spirits) were raised!

  • On Thursday, 9th March 2001 we took 20 Old Folk to the Civic Hall in Winsford to see "A Cavalcade of Variety". The show can best be described as an Old Time Music Hall, so it was ideally suited for our group.
The party mainly came from Oathills Lea (16), and 4 other ladies joined us from Age Concern. Five Rotarians provided cars and were involved in looking after our party throughout the afternoon (we also enjoyed the show!).
We have since received a letter from the Warden of Oathills Leas saying how much everyone enjoyed themselves - a number of residents cannot get out easily so trips like ours are very much appreciated.

  • ROTARY BOOK IN CHESHIRE LIFE
Tarporley Then and Now - the book published by the Rotary Club of Tarporley - is featured in the March 2001 Edition of Cheshire Life. The book is referred to as 'very special', preserving historical moments in the growth of the village through the 20th Century.

  • ROTARY CLUB members provided interview experience to nearly 150 pupils at Tarporley Community High School in Febuary 2001. Each year we provide our services free of charge to run 'mock interviews' giving every year 11 pupil the opportunity to submit an application letter and CV, and then be interviewed for a job. We are always impressed by the many pupils that take advantage of this support that would not otherwise be available. We hope in future to also provide guidance in application letter and CV writing which the school has been unable to provide to date. In April we presented prizes to the seven top scorers.

  • DISTRICT QUIZ
The Rotary Club of Tarporley entered the Rotary District 1050 quiz. The ace team of David and two Johns scored 134 points, compared to the winners 161, and came about 7th. No one was counting after the first two!

  • CHRISTMAS CHESTNUT SELLING
We traditionally give away roast chestnuts on the High Street on the Saturday before Christmas. This year the weather was very cold and our nuts were freezing, but as you'll see from the pictures we soon warmed them - and some passers by. We raised over £100 for charity. Chestnut pictures.
  • PRIMARY SCHOOL HELP FILL EMERGENCY BOXES
Each year we fill 'emergency boxes' which are then stored at a National Centre ready to send out as soon as a disaster - such as the El Salvador earthquake - strikes. In late 2000 pupils from Tarporley Primary School helped to fill three boxes. Story & picture.
  • HORSE RIDE
In September 2000, we held our annual Donation Horse Ride. Over 250 riders and horses came to Kelsall to enjoy a scorching day's riding across field, forest, bridleway, road and track. Once again we managed to raise over £2000 for charity.
  • CANAL TRIP
Also in September 2000 we took a party of 27 members of the Tarporley Autumn Club on a canal barge trip from Wrenbury to Nantwich. The weather was brilliant and everyone had a great day out.

  • CARNIVAL
Another successful CARNIVAL organised in July 2000 together with Tarporley & District Round Table Club. The weather was kind to us, and our celebrity Matthew Kelly ensured that a record crowd attended.
Click here for photo of President David, with Matthew, Rotary District Governor Malcolm and Round Table Chairman Chris.
